Monday 29th December – Rob’s 27th Birthday – Skiing *** Les Get – Sunny/cloudy/snow

We woke up at 5 a.m. and I had brain freeze – all the rest of me was toasty warm but not my forehead! It was -4 degrees in the van and -7 degrees outside! We put the diesel heater on and it soon warmed up. Laid in eating fudge and reading – only enough fudge left for one more day!! After breakfast we went skiing from where we are parked at Les Chavannes again. It is a glorious day and we couldn’t resist seeing the place with better weather than yesterday. We bought the lift pass (70 euros with insurance for both of us) and after a look at the crowds at the lift decided to go down into Les Gets, that was a big mistake, the queues for both the telecabin and the 6 man lift back up were hideous and it took us at least half an hour to get to the telecabin:( I will get all the moans out of the way before I start – way too many people for the number of runs, the queues for every lift are horrendous. We do realise it is a peak week and will avoid it in the future but others seem to think it is busier than usual. The snow was bumpy and threadbare, especially over in Morzine, and the canoned snow (the canons are going all the time) is a pain because it makes the piste very icy. This makes it difficult enough for us and when you get lots and lots of adult and children learning who don’t know how to cope with it, it becomes a nightmare! You also get a face full of ice particles! Anyway, moaning aside we did have some nice runs, particularly over on the La Rosta side, the Reine Des Pres blue piste was really nice and the only one you felt you could relax on. The view from the top of the TS La Rosta lift was spectacular – across the alps to Mont Blanc:) While we were over that side of the resort we saw something we hadn’t seen before – people being abseiled off the Ranfoilly Express lift which had broken down!! There were lots of them and it was going to take some time to get them all down! After a couple of runs down there we couldn’t face the queue to do it again so we cut through behind the Nauchet lift and took a path back to Les Gets, it was very shallow and took a lot of walking/skating but we found an excellent place for our picnic – a small farm building to shelter cows in the summer with a bench table outside. We had to clear 18” of snow off the table and the view up the valley was beautiful:) Down into Les Gets where a few of the crowd must have gone to lunch because it didn’t take quite so long to get a lift back up and then over to Morzine via the Folliets Du Golf lift. The snow was really patchy over in Morzine but we did a few nice paths down and took a couple of lifts back which unfortunately resulted in more walking because the lift we had taken didn’t quite make it far enough to ski back down to Les Gets. We were rewarded though by a group of half a dozen shaggy horses pawing the ground with their hooves to find some shoots to eat:) They were beautiful and something we haven’t seen before – not sure if they were wild or not, they seemed to be in a strange place if they belonged to anyone. We also saw a husky out for a run with his snow boarder owner. The lift down in Les Gets was heaving and we only had 20 minutes until our 5 hour lift pass ran out but luckily we did get through the gate and were amused by the cartoon of an accident prone skier showing on the big screen and a very small old French man trying every which way to make headway in the queue and failing dismally!! By this time the blue skies had disappeared to be replaced by heavy cloud and snow. Got back to the van and yet again couldn’t open the sliding door as it was frozen shut! Got in through the passenger door, put the heater on and packed up while it thawed out. We were driving down the hill by 4pm - still with snow chains – only skidded on one corner!! We drove to Samoens and went to a chocker block Carrefour for some supplies and then on to our favourite car park at Sixt to park up. Rob texted to say they had had a lazy day for his birthday and they were then going out to the cinema to see the Hobbit.
